HELMUT LANG

From the small boutique to the aventgardistic label

Helmut Lang was born Peter Scepka in Vienna in 1956 and initially grew up with his grandparents. After graduating from the commercial academy, he worked for some time as a waiter and Barkeeper. At this time, he had plain clothes tailored for him, which he was often asked about in his environment. This led him to open a small boutique called Bou Bou at the age of 23, where he sold clothes he designed himself. A year later, Scepka presented his first prêt-à-porter collection, which met with great success. After further success, he renamed himself Helmut Lang, after his third first name and the family name of his grandparents, and founded the now famous fashion label. His minimalist-avant-garde Women's collections designs were in extreme contrast to the extravagant designs of contemporary fashion greats such as Thierry Mugler or Jean-Paul Gaultier. With the creation of a first Men's collection In 1987 Helmut Lang returned to his hometown Vienna.

Avantgardism in a time of extravagance

Helmut Lang achieved something that no one had done before: he created fashion for people who were used to nothing but T-shirts, jeans and sneakers. In the mid-90s, these same people established themselves in the creative industries: Artists, actors, stylists, photographers, directors and entrepreneurs and Helmut Lang dressed them. White cotton shirts, androgynous boot-cut pants, simply cut jackets, coats and parkas slung loosely over the shoulders. Characteristic of Lang's fashion were tightly cut black suits and the colours black, white and beige. The combination of high-quality fabrics with high-tech materials or latex and PVC was an innovation. His avant-garde designs brought Helmut Lang a cult status among connoisseurs. For his fashion shows he always hired the same models, another trademark of his work. Among them were celebrities such as Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell or Christy Turlington. In 2004 Helmut Lang surprisingly left his label and all his company shares were sold to the Prada group. All Helmut Lang boutiques around the world were closed as a result. After many designer changes, among others Issey Miyake was appointed designer of the men's collections, the label Helmut Lang is now conceived by an internal team of designers. Helmut Lang itself has since acted as artist.
