HAFERL

The lightning career of the Haferlshoe

The Haferlshoe is a German classic and one of the very few. Yet it has never lost its popularity over the years and evokes traditional feelings of home. In 1803, a shoemaker from Oberstdorf, Franz Schratt, discovered the problems with the footwear of the time and promptly designed the Haferlschuh. Until then, the Allgäu people had only worn wooden shoes, which protected the feet but were impractical in rough terrain. Schratt's footwear inspired not only the local Allgäu people, but also winter holidaymakers, who increased the popularity of the boot and made the Haferlboot known all over the world. The shoe got its name because Englishmen were normally used to ankle-high ankle boots and called the new type of shoe a "half shoe". The Allgäu people lovingly shortened the term to "ha(l)ferl" and this is still the name of the traditional shoe today.
The Haferlshoe has not changed its original form for almost 200 years and is still timeless and functional. Formerly developed primarily for hunters and mountain farmers, the shoe is now the first choice for people who like to move around in nature or prefer traditional footwear. At the same time, each pair has five important features. The raised heel counter provides a secure fit, while the cutout at the ankle creates a light walking feel. A long dust flap protects feet from wetness and dirt. The shuttle toe provides a comfortable forefoot space, especially when running downhill. Lastly, there is the parallel lacing that ensures comfortable and quick on and off.
