Functional clothing inspired by Lake Maggiore

Ideas are often inspired by places and their atmosphere. You just have to know how to collect these ideas. After the end of the Second World War, young Giuseppe Marenzi had an idea: inspired by the geography and climate of Lake Maggiore - rainy winters and hot summers - he knew about the need for innovative, functional clothing to protect himself from the water and persistent winds. Still employed by a raincoat company at the time, Marenzi's military experience during the war led him to come up with an ingenious solution to improve the waterproof properties of fabrics by using castor oil. His idea brought a significant increase in popularity to the company. Well aware that there was a great potential for more functional and technically innovative coats, Giuseppe Marenzi decided to take a big step: to create his own company.

Rain resistant clothing in Italian elegance

In Lesa, a town on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, Marenzi's idea came to life and flourished. In a small factory near a stream that served as a source of energy, the company was born Herno, a tribute to the Erno Valley where the first factory was located. Giuseppe Marenzi worked hard to achieve his goal: to provide functional coats and jackets, resistant to rain and wind, without sacrificing quality, elegance and Italian style. A challenge that began in this village overlooking Lake Maggiore and whose reputation would travel across the ocean with Herno.

Greatest reputation beyond Europe through Herno Raincoats

Raincoasts for men and women were the foundations of the first Herno productions.

Cashmere coats and reversible jackets were added in the 1860s, followed by jackets, suits and dresses. Style, detail and extensions encouraged export to Europe and beyond. In 1971, Herno was one of the first brands in Italy to expand to Japan with the opening of a store in Osaka. In the eighties, Herno conquered America, a golden age for the company dawned. Due to great recognition from emerging brands in the fashion world, such as Hermes and Louis Vuitton, and great craftsmanship, Herno began producing goods for third parties under the name Herno in addition to its own production.
