FERRAGAMO

Visionary and inventor

The story of Salvatore Ferragamo begins in Bonito, a region in Campania, where at the age of nine he designs shoes for his sister's confirmation. Early on, he recognizes his destiny as a shoemaker and learns the craft in Naples. He opens his first store, but then emigrates to Boston to assist his brother, the manager of a shoe factory. Together, they move the business to Hollywood and Ferragamo opens a boutique for custom-made shoes and repairs. Surrounded by prominent film stars, he meets stars such as Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich, who come to appreciate and love his work. In the years that followed, Salvatore Ferragamo designed many innovative creations for famous actors, including Audrey Hepburn's ballerinas and pumps for Marylin Monroe with eleven-centimeter heels - a revolution at the time.

In 1927, the designer returned to Italy and opened a store in Florence, which initially failed due to mismanagement. Nevertheless, Ferragamo expands, eventually managing 700 employees who produce over 300 pairs of shoes a day. Although Ferragamo has been considered a visionary throughout his life, he has always remained committed to traditional, stylish design. Since 1960, his daughter Fiamma, who is also a shoe designer, has been running the company.
