DOROTHEE SCHUMACHER
With basic T-shirts to international fame
German designer Dorothee Schumacher was born in Düsseldorf in 1966 and initially began her career with an apprenticeship at Peek & Cloppenburg. Through her work there and participation in the major Italian fashion shows, she became increasingly encouraged in her plans to start her own fashion label. After her time at Peek & Cloppenburg, she completed an internship at an Italian knitwear label. From there, she moved to France and delved deeper into textile craftsmanship and building her own brand. After returning to Germany and working for some well-known companies, she decided in 1989 to start her own label together with her husband Jörg Singhoff: Schumacher. Their first collection, consisting of four T-shirtswas presented by the designer at the Igedo trade fair in Düsseldorf. The playful and unusual design corresponded to a whole new fashion concept that quickly gained popularity and thus Schumacher expanded abroad within a few years.
